Alpha Male or Beta male?

Hi all, 

I was wondering if someone can provide insight:

There is a man I know who has alpha male characteristics. I notice that he pulls back every time he realizes that he has gone into pursuit mode. 
Betas weaken in pursuit mode.
How would I know if he is showing his true colors, assessing his feelings, or if there is a third option I haven't thought of yet?
